  1. Preheat grill.
  2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, sauté onion in oil until soft (about 5 minutes).
  3. Add balsamic vinegar and brown sugar and cook an additional minute. Set aside.
  4. Combine all burger ingredients and form into 4-6 patties.
  5. Grill patties 5-10 minutes per side on an oiled grill or until a digital thermometer inserted into the patty reads 170F (77C).
  6. Top cooked burgers with onions and smoked Gouda cheese slices.
  7. Close lid until cheese melts.
  8. Spread a generous amount of barbecue sauce on toasted multi-grain buns. Top with burgers and enjoy!
